TITLE : Smart Diagnostics of Nonthermal

ABSTRACT :

The growing demand for chemical-free processing has brought nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasmas (NTAPs) to the forefront across diverse sectors, including environmental remediation, food processing, healthcare, biomedicine, and agriculture. NTAPs are particularly valued for their ability to generate a wide range of reactive chemical species (RCS) under ambient conditions, with gas temperatures close to room temperature and no requirement for external chemical agents or vacuum systems. However, maintaining a nonthermal state at atmospheric pressure is challenging due to frequent electron-neutral collisions, which tend to heat the gas and push the plasma toward thermal equilibrium. While several strategies, such as dielectric barriers, pulsed operation, and enhanced cooling, have been employed to mitigate this, they often compromise operational flexibility and may limit RCS production, which is required for a given application. Thus, a deeper understanding of how operating parameters influence plasma behaviour and RCS generation is essential for system optimization. In this light, our research group at IIT Tirupati has recently explored data-driven machine learning approaches, integrating them with optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and population-kinetic modelling. This hybrid method allows for a more accelerated interpretation of emission spectra, paving the way for real-time plasma diagnostics. In my talk, I will present our recent work applying this approach to optimize an argon-based atmospheric pressure plasma jet, demonstrating its effectiveness through enhanced degradation of the model pollutant atrazine
