RECREATION

Sports play a vital role in campus life at IIT Mandi, contributing significantly to students' overall personality development. Since its inception, the institute has emphasized the importance of physical activities alongside academics. With a wide range of both indoor and outdoor sports facilities, students have access to dedicated coaches who guide them in various disciplines. The National Sports Organization (NSO) is an official extracurricular program at IIT Mandi, offering students the opportunity to engage in structured sports training. First-year students can choose between NSO, the National Service Scheme (NSS), or Hiking as part of their extracurricular activities. Throughout the year, students actively participate in numerous intra- and inter-institutional tournaments, including the prestigious Inter-IIT Sports Meet, where the institute has consistently expanded its contingent and earned recognition through outstanding performances in both individual and team events. IIT Mandi strongly encourages and supports students to pursue sports at all levels, with many representing the institute in state, national, and international championships. Notably, students have won medals in para-Olympic badminton and state-level table tennis competitions. Among the distinguished alumni, Nitesh Kumar (B.Tech, 2020) currently ranks 3rd internationally in para-badminton and has earned multiple accolades, including a silver medal at the 2019 World Championship and a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games. The campus boasts excellent sports infrastructure. The indoor sports complex is equipped with courts for badminton, squash, and table tennis, along with facilities for chess and carrom. Outdoor facilities include basketball, volleyball, and lawn tennis courts, in addition to fields for cricket, soccer, and hockey. Adventure activities such as hiking and trekking are also promoted under expert supervision. A major highlight is the campus swimming pool, which is meticulously maintained with high hygiene standards and is supervised by trained lifeguards, making it a popular hub for recreational and competitive swimming.
