TITLE : Chirality: Materials to Magnons

ABSTRACT :

I will have a brief overview of exploratory synthesis and ways to discover new compounds and characterize them, followed by a pedagogical overview of the recently identified magnetic class known as altermagnets and placing them in context alongside conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. I will then present my research on investigating chiral magnons in the metallic Altermagnet CrSb. This will include a discussion of the experimental challenges associated with probing magnons in metallic systems and the strategies used to overcome them. Finally, I will share results from polarized neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on CrSb and introduce a new approach for determining chiral magnon splitting.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER :

Dr. Ashutosh Singh completed his B.Sc. in 2016 from Ramjas College, University of Delhi. He pursued an integrated MS–PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) under the supervision of Prof. Sebastian C. Peter, graduating in 2023. Since January 2024, he has been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the group of Prof. Alannah Hallas at the Quantum Matter Institute, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, where he is also a recipient of the prestigious Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship. His research interests lie in solid-state synthesis of intermetallic materials and magnetism, with a focus on exploring novel magnetic phenomena.
